Berlin - Restaurant Schleusenkrug

"Schleusenkrug, Der Biergarten in Tiergarten"

In 1954, the inn was opened at the lock in Tiergarten and has been well visited ever since.

Schleusenkrug a warm summer evening

You can find Schleusenkrug near the zoo. During the war, one of the 2 flak towers in the Tiergarten was build close to the lock. Now it has been torn down, but some of the foundation is a playground for the hippos in the zoo.

In 1954, the Fistler family opened Schleusenkrug at the Tiergarten lock. Before the war, they had already run a kiosk that served drinks and provided walkers and ship passengers with ice cream and refreshments. In connection with a reconstruction of the lock, the Fistler family also got a permanent building, which was added to the actual lock house. This preceded long negotiations with the authorities, as Berlin's waterways were at this time under GDR administration and had been since the end of the war. The lock building was divided so that in the basement the "GDR comrades" ensured smooth ship traffic, while the West Berliners on the floor above enjoyed life with sun, beer and hearty German cuisine.
