Within the forest's borders you will find Berlin's oldest palace, the
Jagdschloss Grunewald, a Renaissance hunting lodge.
Jagdschloss Grunewald
Jagdschloss Grunewald is the oldest preserved castle in Berlin. It is
located on the southern water edge of Grunewaldsee and is part of Dahlem in
the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. Jagdschloss Grunewald was built in 1542 -
1543. The owner was Joachim II Hector, Elector of the Margraviate of
Brandenburg. The building was created in the Renaissance style and was named
Zum grünen Wald, "To the Green Forest", and gave the entire Grunewald its
name. Around the year 1800, the castle was also named Grunewald.
During renovations between 1705 and 1708 overseen by Frederick I, the first
king of Prussia, it received its baroque design by Martin Grünberg.
Jagdschloss Grunewald has been administered by the "Prussian Palaces and
Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg" since 1932 and is used as a museum.
It contains paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, his son Lucas Cranach the
Younger, and from the Netherlands and Germany from the 15th to the 19th
century. Jagdschloss Grunewald has the only hall in Berlin from the
Renaissance period. Since 1977, a collection of hunting equipment has been
set up in a nearby building.
