Berlin - Beelitz-Heilstätten hospital
Beelitz-Heilstätten hospital
- Monument to Soviet medicsBeelitz is best known for its asparagus, but outside the town there is a dilapidated and abandoned hospital, which has a very exciting history. In 1898 it was built and used as a sanatorium for Berlin's population, as here was light, air and beautiful nature. Later at the beginning of World War I it was converted into a military hospital and here soldiers like Adolf Hitler were treated after being wounded during the Battle of the Somme.

Between the two world wars, the hospital was again used to treat civilians for diseases such as tuberculosis, but during World War II it again became a military hospital, which also continued after the war, when the Soviet military took over. Then East German coryphaeus such as Erich Honecker was treated here. Incidentally, it was also from here that his escape to the Soviet Union began after the fall of the wall

Nowadays, the hospital is best known for being the backdrop for films such as The Pianist, Operation Valkyrie and not least the Danish film Men and Chickens, where it is quite clear that the film was shot at the hospital.
