Berlin - Majakowskiring
Majakowskiring – DDR elite in Pankow
Majakowskiring
At the end of the war, the Soviets cordoned off several areas around the Hohenschönhausen prison. Another area was the residential area behind Schönhausen Castle. The area became "barred" on August 9, 1945 and the residents had to move out. It was all seized. A high fence was erected all the way around the area, which later became a real wall. Inside the restricted area were the roads Majakowskiring, Rudolf-Ditzen-Weg, Pasternak Weg, Stille Weg, Tschaikowskie-strasse. The area is easily recognizable in aerial photos due to the characteristic, racetrack-shaped Majakowskiring. Inside the area then lived the supreme rulers of the GDR.
Majakowskiring 29
During the GDR era, the highest-ranking party comrade, Wilhelm Pieck, lived in the house at Majakowskiring 29. Wilhelm Pieck was the first president of the GDR and lived there until his death in 1960.
After Wilhelm Pieck's death, many of the GDR's leaders moved to a more secluded and secured area in Wandlitz, specifically the Waldsiedlung, also known as "Waldsiedlung Wandlitz," was an exclusive and heavily guarded residential area for the GDR's leaders. It was built in a wooded area near Wandlitz, about 30 km north of East Berlin, and was in use from 1960 to 1989.

Berlin is always worth a visit - summer or winter - but where to go? Here are some slightly unusual and very different suggestions for places I like to go.
