Berlin - Schwerbelastungskörper
In connection with Hitler's and Speers' plans for the construction of a new capital "Germania", architect Speer was rightly concerned about whether Berlin's sandy soils could withstand the heavy loads required by their dream castles. For the same reason, he had a "pressure gauge" built, which was to measure whether the subsoil could hold.
Schwerbelastungskörper
The pressure gauge is 18 meters high and weighs 12,650 tons. It occupies exactly 100 m2 and the pressure on the subsoil is 12.65 kg per cm2. The test also showed that the subsoil was unsuitable for such a large load. The concrete block had to sink a maximum of 6 centimeters, but it sank 18 after 3 years. The Arc de Triomphe, which should have been built on top, was planned to be 117 meters high and 170 meters wide - significantly larger than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
