Berlin - Siegessäule
Siegessäule –
View over TiergartenYou can visit the
On the postcard from 1898, you can see the Siegessäule in front of the Reichstag building. It was not until 1939 that it got its current central location on Strasse des 17. Juni.
It is highly recommended - on a clear day - to take the time to go up the tower, because from there, there is an excellent view over Berlin.
Siegessäule in front of "Reichstag" - 1898
The Bismarck monument and the Siegessäule in front of the "Reichstag".
Behind the Siegessäule is the old "Krollopper Theater". A Royal Opera Theatre (1894–1933) and Parliament during the National Socialist era (1933–1942). Because parliamentary meetings could not be held as usual after the Reichstag fire, the Kroll Opera House was used instead. Subsequently, it was used to a limited extent as an opera house, as it was heavily damaged during the war. Demolished in 1957. At the time when the picture was taken the place was called Königsplatz - The Postcard was written in 1925.
"The Kroll Opera House"
The remote location is perhaps the explanation why the pillar survived World War II. After the war, the French wanted the pillar blown up, but the other victors would not agree.
The road, now known as Strasse des 17 Juni, was called Charlottenburger Chaussee until 1953. It was renamed to honor the victims of the 17 June 1953 uprising in East Germany. The Charlottenburger Chaussee was laid out as a paved road in 1799 and became an important link to the wealthy western suburbs during the 19th century. The road was part of the much larger east-west axis in Berlin and was widened during the Nazi era and used for victory parades, etc.
On top of the "Siegessäule" you can see what the Berliners call "Gold Else"

Berlin is always worth a visit - summer or winter - but where to go? Here are some slightly unusual and very different suggestions for places I like to go.
