A View from Cabo da Roca - Spring 2009

Cabo da Roca is the name of the westernmost point on the European mainland - a rugged rocky promontory on the Portuguese Atlantic coast in the municipality of Sintra, approx. 32 km west of Lisbon and 12 km northwest of Cascais. The name means "Decoration of the Rock" in Portuguese.

Should one be in doubt .... there are also signs that tell where you are - Spring 2015

Much of the vegetation is low-lying and adapted to salt water and windy weather. It is home to a number of flora, including the invasive plant species Carpobrotus edulis. This was introduced as a ground cover by local residents several decades ago, but now it covers much of the arable land on Cabo da Roca.

The monument also bears the inscription: “Aqui ... Evil a terra acaba e o mar começa ...” “Here ... where the land ends and the sea begins ...” Which originates from the 17th century poet, Luís de Camões.
