Lisbon - Castelo São Jorge

A view from Castelo São Jorge - Marts 2009

Lisbon's old castle is located on one of the city's seven hills and when you stand up there, you are in no doubt as to why this particular location was chosen. About a few thousand years ago, the Romans built a fortress on this site. Later, both the Visigoths and the Moors built on the fortifications. However, it is believed that it was King Alfonso Henriques who laid the foundation stone for the castle's current form, as he wanted to celebrate the victory over the Moors in the mid-12th century. The castle was severely damaged in 1755 during the earthquake and remained unused until the buildings began to be renovated in the 1930s.

It is often a bit hazy over the Tagus River ...

... but on a good day, it's not a probem ...

.... then you can see both the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge and the Cristo Rei monument on the other side of the river.

Castelo São Jorge - Marts 2009

Castelo de São Jorge is located in the Alfama district and is Lisbon's oldest structure. The castle has been used for weapons depots, theaters, prisons and fortifications. Today, Castelo de São Jorge is a peaceful place with stunning views of much of Lisbon and Alfarma. Incidentally, Alfama is one of the absolute best places to stroll around the capital.

Evil tongues claim that this is actually more of a new building than a so-called restoration of the old castle, but everyone can agree that the view up there is excellent.

A couple of years ago, an entrance hall was introduced to the castle, which is reasonably all things considered and not least due to the country's economic situation. The price in 2021 is 10 Euro for an adult.
