Vreeland - Van Leer Brug - Autumn 2020

Vreeland is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is located near the river Vecht, about 2 km north of Loenen aan de Vecht. It received city rights in 1265 and has about 1300 inhabitants.
Vreeland is situated in the Vechtstreek, called after the river Vecht. It is surrounded by several lakes, including the Loosdrecht and Kortenhoef Lakes. Several bike routes transverse the village, making it a touristic attraction when the weather is fine.
Two important hiking routes traverse the village: the "Floris de Vijfde" path and the "Waterlinie" path; they were opened in September 2004.
Vreeland has also a Michelin star restaurant called "De Nederlanden", and a pancake house called "Noord-Brabant".

This is one of the most beautiful routes I think. It's not the fastest to Vreeland but who cares when you can enjoy the route all the way.

The Route is about 18 km. long and it goes through Nigtevecht which is a small town in the province of Utrecht where there is a very nice place near the ferry in Dorpsstraat. From that place you can enjoy the little ferry carry it's passengers the few meters for free and when you come to Nigtevecht you have to take the ferry over to the other side to get to Vreeland.

Drive east from Herengracht to Kerklaan 190 m - Turn right and follow Hoogstraat 290 m - Turn left and follow Lange Vechtbrug 64 m - Turn right and follow Ossenmarkt 200 m - Turn right and follow 's-Gravelandseweg 4,1 km - At the roundabout, take the second exit Gooilandseweg/N236 500 m - At the roundabout, take the third exit Dammerweg/N523 - Carry on at N523 2,7 km - Carry on at Dammerweg 140 m - Turn right and carry on at Dammerweg 62 m - Turn right and follow Eilandseweg 1,8 km - Take the ferry "Nigtevecht - Nederhorst Den Berg" to the road to Nigtevecht 60 m.

There is only 7 km. from Nightevecht to Vreeland and most of the time you drive along the river Vecht which is the most enjoyable route.

When you leave the ferry continue straight ahead 58 m - Turn to the right and follow Dorpsstraat 75 m - Turn to the left and follow Nieuweweg 190 m - Turn to the right and follow Aetsveldsestraat 120 m - Turn to the left and follow Raadhuisstraat 250 m - Carry on at Kanaaldijk Oost 99 m - Turn to the left and follow Vreelandseweg 3,6 km - Carry on at Nigtevechtseweg 3,1 km - Turn to the right and follow Singel 150 m - Turn to the left and follow Vijverlaan 46 m - Turn to the left and follow Pomonaweg 15 m - Turn to the right and follow Vijverlaan 170 m

And then you are in Vreeland

When many people talks about amazing places they often mention places like Paris, Rome or Vienna but I could easily add Vreeland because it gives me the same happy feeling. What can be better than to sit a nice sunny day in a very nice place and watch all the smiling sailors with their passengers passing by in their beautiful boats.

Close to the "Van Leer brug" there is a very good restaurant in Breedstraat 8 - Noord Brabrant' - which has specialised in making pancakes. They are among the best and people come from all around to taste the famous pancakes. It could be a very good idea to end the visit in Vreeland with a couple of pancakes in this cosy place.

After the visit in Vreeland you can either take the same way back or for example cross the bridge and drive back along the other side of the river to Sluis ´t Hemeltje where you can follow Vreelandseweg and Uitermeer home. It will be another nice trip.
